Alix Perez's debut album, 1984, offers a little bit of everything for drum 'n' bass heads: the dark sci-fi intro of the title track gives way to warm abstract breaks, while "The Cut Deepens" maintains the darkness all the way through, punctuated by the Foreign Beggars. "Fade Away" starts to fill in the percussion, and "Voices" delved deep into the tech-step. But this flies in the face of the soulful "Forsaken" as it slides into Ursula Rucker's spoken word atop the slow "Intersections." But "I'm Free" steps up the blips, while "Suffer In Silence" edges into throbbing atmospheric territory. The simple piano line on "Contradictions" adds a touch of romance, while "No Grudge" goes for a clicky-glitchy feel that continues onto "Hemlines," the quiet, understated closer. A versatile year, this 1984.
